Note that by using the number, you can only (if you are lucky) get the approximate location, but if you can find a web contact page, most likely you can get much closer. Write this number down and put it in a safe place. This is your IMEI (international mobile equipment identity) number. If your cell phone should get stolen, you can then contact your cell phone provider. cell operators can block or track all calls originating from a lost or stolen cell phone provided the IMEI number is available to them.

Another way to be prepared is if you are plugged into some type of service or software that makes use of your GPS receiver that is in your phone. Then you can contact that company or utilize that software for assistance.
